Heathrow Opens Special Lane for Canadians

Quicker through Customs...

A SPECIAL lane for low-risk travellers has been opened at Heathrow. The move comes just days ahead of the start of the 2012 Olympics and allows Australians, Americans, Canadians, Japanese and other nationalities that do not need visas and are deemed to be a low security risk to use an alternative, faster security lane. According to a Border Force spokesman the new lane is being opened on a trial basis and is reserved for passengers who generally take less time for processing. The UK Border Force is also employing extra staff, using retired officers and civil servants to work during the Olympic period to help reduce excessive queues, which have reportedly lasted up to two-and-a-half hours over the last several months.  The government has been closely examining the performance of border staff and airport operators in recent weeks, and is due to table a high-profile report later this week. Passengers using the airport during Games are advised to arrive at least two hours before departure time for check-in and immigration procedures. To avoid anticipated traffic jams, they are also advised to take the Heathrow Express to the airport.
