Hilton and Marriott to Charge for Canceling Room on Day of Scheduled Stay

Hilton Worldwide has tightened its cancellation policy so that people who rescind their bookings the same day as the scheduled arrival will be charged a fee. Marriott International may do the same.

Hilton will start taking credit card information with guest bookings as of Jan. 1 and will charge the guest the first night’s room rate if a cancellation is made after 11:59 p.m. the night prior to the scheduled stay.

The company stressed that cancellation policies differ across hotels, and that some hoteliers within Hilton’s chains may invoke even stricter policies. “Along with providing guests greater consistency in the booking process, these changes will make more rooms available for travelers needing last-minute accommodations,” Hilton said in a statement.

Marriott is invoking a similar cancellation policy starting next year, according to the New York Times. Marriott representatives did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
