Victoria, Seychelles, one of the smallest capitals in the world

Attracting thousands of visitors annually, the island country of Seychelles is known for its beautiful beaches that can be found in one of its 115 islands. Most travelers bypass its capital city Victoria, and head off to the islands not realizing that Victoria has its share of attractions too.

One of the smallest capital cities in the world, Victoria is located on the island of Mahe. A bustling city, and the cultural and business hub of the country, Victoria covers a total area of 7.8 square miles, and is inhabited by more than 25,000 people. Originally settled by French colonists in 1778, the city has retained its provincial charm even if thousands of tourists pass through the city to reach its outlying islands. French, English, and Seychellois Creole are widely spoken so travelers can feel right at home in Victoria, and the rest of the country as well. The Seychelles International Airport is your gateway to Seychelles.  It is about 10 kilometers from Victoria and is served by Air France, Air Austral, Emirates, Etihad, Condor, Kenya Airways, and is the hub of Air Seychelles.

Before you head to the islands, you must spend at least a day in Victoria to explore its numerous attractions which includes the Clock Tower, erected in 1903 and a replica the clock tower on London's Vauxhall Bridge; the Tempio Hindu, a colorful  and beautifully decorated Hindu Temple which features Hindu scripture on its exterior; Victoria Market where you can shop for coconut oil, spices, and fresh produce; Seychelles Natural History Museum where you will learn more about the culture and history of the country; Kenwyn House where you can shop for artwork and jewelry;  the Trois Freres Trail for hiking an trekking; and the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens which showcase the endemic plants and trees of the country.

If you are planning a trip to Seychelles, you must include spending a day or two in Victoria. Consult your travel agent for more details.
