Why Join the TSA Pre-check Program?

Faster airport security screening, quicker dedicated lanes, and an improved travel experience...

Before answering the question posed in the title of this article, let me re-define what the TSA Pre-Check Program is.

When you are standing in the U.S. Customs line for what seems like an eternity, and are admiring a number of travellers seemingly by passing your line, those are the travellers on the TSA Pre-Check Program.

Pre-Check lines are generally processed at twice the rate that normal lanes allow for, enabling security agents to dedicate more staff to higher risk searches. In most cases, you can leave your shoes, belts and light jackets on and keep laptops and liquids in your bag. (TSA always reserves the right for random and unpredictable checks).

Canadian citizens who are members of Nexus are eligible to apply for the TSA Pre-Check Program (and get through U.S. Customs and Security faster).

TSA Pre✓™ Application Program

  1. Complete an online application.
  2. Schedule an appointment at a TSA Pre✓™ application center.
  3. Visit the TSA Pre✓™ application center, pay the $85 fee, provide valid government identification and fingerprints.
  4. A Known Traveler Number will be sent to you via mail or can be obtained online.

Once enrolled, your "Known Traveller Number" is used when making air reservations (like your Passport Number and other forms of I.D.). Travelers flying out of the U.S. on Air Canada airlines have the opportunity to receive TSA Pre✓™ when utilizing printed boarding passes at the airport check-in desk or from the kiosk in the departure lobby.  Air Canada will expand its participation in TSA Pre✓™ to includea mobile app and printed at home paper boarding passes later this year.
